Ultrasound-guided injections

At the Sporthorse Medical Diagnostic Centre (SMDC), we regularly use ultrasound-guided injection techniques to treat joints, tendons, ligaments, and bursae—both in the limbs and in the spine. Thanks to this method, we can perform treatments with great precision and accuracy, ensuring increased effectiveness and minimal risk of complications.

Ultrasound and injection simultaneously

Ultrasound-guided injection means that real-time ultrasonography is used during the treatment to visualize the exact location of the area to be treated. The veterinarian can see on the screen where the needle is located and guide it precisely to the targeted structure, such as a tendon, bursa, or (facet) joint.

Ultrasound-guided injections are used for:

  • Intra-articular injections for joint inflammations or osteoarthritis
  • Injections in or around tendons and ligaments (e.g., injuries to the flexor tendons or the check ligament)
  • Treatment of bursitis (e.g., navicular bursitis)
  • Injections of the spine, such as facet joints or SI joints

Advantage of combining

Ultrasound-guided injections offer the advantage of:

  • Accuracy: the targeted structure is directly visualized
  • Safety: important blood vessels and nerves are avoided
  • Effectiveness: the medication is delivered precisely to the location where it is needed
  • Documentation: the procedure and injection site can be recorded for the medical file

At SMDC, these injections are performed by veterinarians with extensive experience, supported by high-quality equipment. Ultrasound-guided injections are often part of a broader treatment and rehabilitation plan, tailored to the individual horse and its discipline. This approach promotes faster and safer recovery while preserving long-term athletic function.
