Focused shockwave therapy is a scientifically proven and widely used treatment method in equine sports medicine. At the Sporthorse Medical Diagnostic Centre (SMDC), we use this therapy as part of a comprehensive, customized treatment plan to specifically stimulate the healing of tendons, ligaments, joints, or bone structures.
Concentrated focus
Focused shockwave therapy (also known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy, ESWT) uses high-energy acoustic pulses that penetrate deep into the tissue. Unlike radial shockwave, where the energy is spread over a larger surface, focused shockwave concentrates the energy at a specific, adjustable depth, reaching deep into tendons, ligaments, or bone.
The shockwaves create a microtrauma at the cellular level that stimulates the body to:
- Improved blood circulation (angiogenesis)
- Accelerated cell division and tissue repair
- Pain reduction through the modulation of nerve receptors
- Stimulation of growth factors in tendon and bone tissue
Application of shockwave therapy
Focused shockwave therapy is used, among other things, for:
- Tendon and ligament injuries (e.g., flexor tendons, check ligament, joint ligaments)
- Enthesopathies (tendon attachment injuries)
- Kissing spines
- (Chronic) back pain or SI joint problems
At SMDC, treatments are performed by experienced veterinarians using advanced shockwave equipment. The location and depth of the injury are carefully determined in advance with ultrasound or other imaging techniques, allowing highly targeted treatment. Often, a short series of sessions is sufficient, and shockwave is combined with a rehabilitation plan, physiotherapy, and other therapies such as injections.
Shockwave therapy is not painful, but the horse is often given light sedation for comfort and safety. This innovative technique supports faster and more sustainable recovery, with a reduced risk of relapse.
