Treatment of gastric disorders
Gastric disorders are common in sport horses. The most well-known are gastric ulcers, which occur in two forms:
- Equine Squamous Gastric Disease (ESGD) – ulcers in the upper (non-glandular) part of the stomach
- Equine Glandular Gastric Disease (EGGD) – inflammation or ulcers in the lower, glandular part of the stomach
Accurate diagnosis is essential
For effective treatment of the stomach and intestines, an accurate diagnosis is essential. At SMDC, the gastrointestinal system is examined by an ECVSMR specialist. Depending on the symptoms, various examinations may be performed, such as:
- Gastroscopy
- Biopsies of the stomach or intestinal wall
- Abdominal ultrasonography
Treatment options
At SMDC, the treatment of gastric disorders is tailored to the type, severity, and location of the lesions, and may include:
- Antacids
- Mucosal protectants (or gastric coating agents)
- Anti-inflammatory medication
- Nutritional management
Medication and follow-up
At SMDC, the effectiveness of treatment is monitored with a follow-up gastroscopy after therapy. Only with an accurate diagnosis, targeted treatment, and optimization of management and training is lasting recovery possible.
