Restorative dentistry

At the Sporthorse Medical Diagnostic Centre (SMDC), maintaining a healthy and functional set of teeth is our priority. With our specialized expertise and modern techniques, we provide not only preventive and routine dental care but also restorative dentistry. This allows us to repair damage to incisors or molars and prevent further complications.

Quick action is essential

When a horse sustains trauma to an incisor or canine tooth and the pulp is exposed (the central cavity of the tooth containing blood vessels, nerves, and lymph vessels), quick action is essential. Within 24 to 48 hours, SMDC can provide restorative treatment by carefully covering the pulp and filling the tooth. This approach significantly reduces the risk of root canal infection.

Infundibular caries

In cases of infundibular caries, a condition where the enamel and dentin of the infundibulum (a structure in the center of the molar) are affected, we can professionally clean the molars and fill them with special restorative material. This technique prevents the caries from spreading to the pulp or causing fractures and root problems.

Restorative dental treatments are performed by our experienced team of Academy of Equine Dentistry (Idaho, USA) certified dental technicians and veterinarians, working closely with the rest of the SMDC team. When necessary, imaging (X-ray or CT) is used beforehand to accurately assess the nature and depth of the damage.

In this way, we aim to ensure the functionality, comfort, and durability of the teeth.
