A healthy set of teeth is essential for a horse’s well-being, feed intake, and performance. Each year, a horse’s teeth grow on average 2 to 5 mm, which is normally balanced by natural wear during chewing. When this wear does not occur evenly, various dental problems can develop, leading to pain, reduced performance, or even behavioral changes.
Dental treatment options
Molar extraction
Extraction of a molar is sometimes necessary when it is irreparably damaged, inflamed, or affected by caries or other dental conditions.
Restorative dentistry (endodontics)
In cases of fracture, trauma, or caries of a tooth or molar, it is sometimes possible to fill the tooth to prevent further damage.
Incisor extraction
Removal of an incisor may be necessary in cases of an old fracture of the tooth or root, a root canal infection, or the presence of EOTRH. This is a painful condition characterized by tooth resorption and excessive cement formation.
