A pre-purchase examination provides insight into the horse’s risk profile

A thorough pre-purchase examination is essential to accurately assess a horse’s risk profile. At the Sporthorse Medical Diagnostic Centre (SMDC), we perform examinations according to the highest veterinary standards, supported by a comprehensive team of specialists, modern facilities, and advanced imaging technology.

All examinations are performed by Dr. Brenda Hoogelander, certified pre-purchase veterinarian, or Dr. Erik Bergman, together with a second experienced colleague, following the “four-eyes principle” (two veterinarians). Our clinic is equipped with all necessary facilities and state-of-the-art technology to ensure a high-quality and comprehensive examination.

It is important to clearly identify the client before the examination. The client must sign the treatment agreement in advance (digitally or on-site). This person is responsible for payment, regardless of the examination outcome. Transparency and mutual understanding form the foundation of every collaboration.

Clinical examination

The examination begins with an anamnesis, during which we discuss the horse’s history, training workload, and expected use. This is followed by a thorough clinical examination, which includes:

  • Inspection at rest: including palpation of the entire body, examination of the spine, dental inspection, eye examination, and auscultation of the heart and lungs, among others.
  • In-hand movement analysis: small circles (figure-eight) to the left and right, walk and trot on a straight line (on hard and soft surfaces), circles on hard and soft surfaces (including canter).
  • Flexion tests of all four limbs.
  • If desired: evaluation under saddle.
After the examination, blood samples can be taken for general testing, doping control, or export purposes. All clinical components of the examination are recorded on video for internal review and dispute resolution. These videos are available upon request but are not provided as standard.

Diagnostic Imaging

Based on the chosen examination protocol, the horse is evaluated using digital imaging:

Radiographs:

  • Standard examination: 24 images of the limbs
  • Spine: images of the neck and back
  • International examination: a comprehensive set of images of both the limbs and the spine

At the client’s request, this can be expanded with:

  • Ultrasonography: evaluation of tendons, ligaments, and spine
  • Endoscopy: examination of the airways
  • Cardiology: echocardiographic heart examination
  • Scintigraphy, CT, MRI, and UTC are available for complex or extensive pre-purchase examinations.

Images and report available digitally

All images are delivered digitally via a link. International buyers receive a clear English-language report, the link to the imaging material, and any additional recommendations. Telephone consultation with the buyer’s veterinarian is also possible, ensuring clear communication.

Why choose a pre-purchase examination at SMDC?

  • Performed by certified and highly experienced pre-purchase veterinarians
  • Examination under optimal conditions at a professionally equipped clinic
  • All imaging and additional diagnostics available immediately
  • Internationally recognized examination report and digital transmission of images
  • Transparent process with clear agreements and documentation
  • Option for multidisciplinary evaluation in case of uncertainty or unusual findings

PROK Examination (KWPN/NRPS)

SMDC is certified to perform PROK examinations on behalf of the KWPN. This includes taking radiographic images of:

  • Forelimbs: pastern and fetlock
  • Hind limbs: fetlock, hock, and stifle
  • Spine: neck and back

The images are sent digitally to the KWPN, where they are evaluated by an independent committee. The PROKdesignation (Project Radiographic Examination KWPN) is awarded to horses that meet the established radiographic standards. Owners receive the official results within approximately four weeks.

Together with top specialists in their respective fields, we ensure the most thorough and accurate examination of your horse.
