When a horse is no longer performing as expected or desired, without obvious lameness or acute complaints, it is referred to as poor performance. This may manifest as reduced willingness to work, loss of strength, difficulty with collection or bending, behavioral changes under saddle, or simply “not being the same horse.” The cause is often complex and multifactorial.
At SMDC, we specialize in identifying the underlying causes of poor performance in sport horses . Our approach is thorough, structured, and multidisciplinary. Each case begins with a comprehensive intake, during which we discuss the horse’s history, training workload, nutrition, previous injuries, equipment, and riding-related observations. This is followed by a complete clinical examination, evaluating the horse both at rest and in motion.
The evaluation may include:
- Orthopedic examination , including objective gait analysis (Sleip, Lameness Locator, or Qualisys) and, if indicated, diagnostic nerve blocks.
- Spine and muscle examination, with particular focus on coordination, asymmetry, and muscle tension.
- Cardiac and respiratory examination, including auscultation, echocardiography , endoscopy, lung lavage, or tracheal wash.
- Internal sports medicine examination , including blood analysis, muscle and metabolic profiling, or gastroscopy.
- Diagnostic maging (radiography, ultrasonography, CT, MRI, scintigraphy) to detect subtle abnormalities.
- Dental examination and hoof balance analysis
Evaluation by a team of specialists
The case is evaluated by a team of specialists, including European Diplomates in Veterinary Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation (ECVSMR), Diagnostic Imaging (ECVDI), and Anesthesia. If desired, we collaborate closely with the referring veterinarian, equine physiotherapist, and farrier. After the examination, the owner receives a clear report with the diagnosis, treatment recommendations, and, if applicable, a rehabilitation plan.
At SMDC, we take poor performance seriously: with expertise, experience, and advanced diagnostics, we capture the complete picture to support a sustainable recovery of both performance and well-being.
