Objective gait analysis
At the Sporthorse Medical Diagnostic Centre (SMDC), we use objective gait analysis systems to capture even the smallest changes in a horse’s movement patterns. In addition to visual observation, these systems provide measurable data on symmetry, stride length, and limb loading, allowing us to detect subtle lameness or compensatory movements.
Which systems do we use?
- Sleip AI – A smartphone-based system that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze video recordings of the horse in motion.
- Lameness Locator – A sensor-based system that accurately measures movements of the head, pelvis, and limbs.
- Qualisys Motion Capture – An advanced 3D camera system that provides highly detailed movement data by placing markers on the horse’s body.
Conducting the examination
Veterinarians and physiotherapists performing these analyses are EGAS-certified (Equine Gait Analysis Society). This international certification ensures that the collected data is always correctly interpreted and placed within the proper clinical context for the horse.
The results provide precise insight into:
- Subtle left-right asymmetry
- The effect of diagnostic nerve blocks or treatments
- Progress during a rehabilitation program
By combining these systems with our clinical expertise, SMDC can make even more precise diagnoses and tailor treatment and rehabilitation plans to the individual horse. Objective motion analysis not only increases accuracy but also provides measurable progress.
