Muscle examination and endurance
Muscles are among the most important organs when it comes to the performance of a sport horse. Through targeted examinations, we can assess muscle function and detect any abnormalities. At the Sporthorse Medical Diagnostic Centre (SMDC), these examinations are performed by a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ECVSMR).
Indications for a muscle examination or exercise test
- Poor performance or rapid fatigue
- Muscle stiffness, trembling, or pain (after exercise)
- Recurrent lameness
- Abnormal muscle-related blood values
- Suspected muscle disorders
- Suspected overtraining
- Localized sweating during or after exercise
- Performance monitoring
Contents of the examination
The clinical examination is the first step in evaluating the horse’s muscles and endurance. In most cases, the examination begins with a comprehensive
Exercise test
An exercise test is the ideal method to objectively measure a horse’s endurance. Depending on the horse’s discipline and level, a suitable type of exercise is selected. During the test, various parameters are measured, such as heart rate, lactate (lactic acid) levels, and motion analysis. A heart recording (ECG) during exercise can also be included. Additionally, blood samples are taken before and after exercise, and the results are compared.
The results of the exercise test are compared with those of healthy, well-performing horses in the same category (similar discipline, level, and age). When exercise tests are repeated regularly on the same horse, this allows continuous monitoring of the horse’s endurance.
Based on the results, targeted examinations of other body systems may be performed. These typically include the respiratory system, heart, or musculoskeletal system.
Muscle biopsy
A muscle biopsy involves collecting a small sample of muscle tissue to detect muscle diseases. The procedure is relatively simple and minimally invasive, yet it often provides valuable information for diagnosis and optimal training guidance.
Genetic testing
Genetic testing in sport horses is used to detect hereditary muscle disorders such as PSSM1 (Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy Type 1). With a simple blood test, it can be determined whether a horse carries a genetic mutation that increases the risk of muscle problems.
Same-day results available
Our specialists combine the results of this examination with a thorough clinical assessment, training history, information about the horse’s goals, and any additional diagnostic findings. This approach provides a complete picture of the horse’s cardiac health.
The findings are documented in a written report and discussed with the owner and, when applicable, the referring veterinarian. Through specialist expertise, advanced equipment, and multidisciplinary collaboration, we provide a reliable assessment and effective treatment recommendations for all types of cardiac conditions.
