Blood tests

Blood testing is a valuable tool for assessing the overall health of a sport horse. It can reveal abnormalities that are not easily detected through physical examination, such as inflammation, muscle damage, organ dysfunction, or electrolyte imbalances. At the Sporthorse Medical Diagnostic Centre (SMDC), all blood tests are performed by a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ECVSMR).

Indications for blood testing

  • Routine check-ups and preventive veterinary care
  • Poor performance
  • Examination of specific organs (muscles, liver, kidneys) and lung function
  • Investigation of metabolic disorders (PPID, EMS)
  • Investigation of infectious diseases
  • Doping tests

In-house laboratory

At SMDC, we have a modern in-house laboratory, allowing us to perform blood tests quickly and reliably on-site. For additional analyses, we collaborate with specialized external laboratories both within and outside Europe.

Hematology

Hematology (or “blood profile”) provides insight into the health of sport horses and helps detect issues such as inflammation or anemia. This analysis includes red blood cells and hemoglobin, white blood cells, and platelets.

Organ biochemistry

Biochemical blood testing provides insight into the function of the kidneys, liver, muscles, and proteins of the sport horse. This allows for effective monitoring of these vital organs.

Electrolyte balance

Electrolytes are essential for fluid balance, organ function, and ultimately the performance of sport horses. Therefore, we check whether electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and chloride are in balance.

Additional analyses

In specific cases, we analyze blood values directly at our clinic. This includes measuring inflammatory proteins (to detect infections), lactate levels (to monitor endurance), and blood oxygen levels (to assess lung function).

Same-day results available

Thanks to direct access to our in-house laboratory, results are usually available within minutes. It is also possible to send samples to an external laboratory for additional analyses. In such cases, results are typically available within a few days. For doping tests, the processing time may take 10 to 15 working days.

The evaluation is performed by one of our European specialists (Diplomate ECVSMR), ensuring that the results are expertly interpreted within the context of the clinical presentation.

The findings are documented in a written report and discussed with the owner and, when applicable, the referring veterinarian. Through specialist expertise, advanced equipment, and multidisciplinary collaboration, we provide a reliable assessment and effective treatment advice.
