International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology
The International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP) is a globally recognized organization committed to advancing knowledge and skills in the diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic conditions in sport horses. With a specific focus on locomotor disorders of the musculoskeletal system, ISELP aims to improve clinical decision-making and technical expertise in diagnostic imaging among veterinarians. The society was founded by Professor Jean Marie Denoix, an internationally renowned authority in equine locomotor pathology.
ISELP Program
The ISELP program consists of a series of 8 modules that provide in-depth training in the anatomy, biomechanics, clinical examination, and imaging of specific regions of the horse. This modular curriculum combines detailed theoretical instruction with practical ultrasound and radiology wetlabs, allowing participants to apply their knowledge directly. Veterinarians who complete all modules and successfully pass the comprehensive examinations earn the title of ISELP Certified Member, an internationally recognized credential of expertise in locomotor disorders, diagnostic imaging, and treatment.
SMDC role
Dr. Erik Bergman is ISELP Certified and serves as Vice President of the organization. He is closely involved in the development of the program’s content and the global dissemination of specialized knowledge. Both Professor Denoix and Dr. Bergman give presentations worldwide on behalf of ISELP.
Since 2014, SMDC in Heesch has been a proud host location for an annual ISELP module. This multi-day continuing education event attracts veterinarians from around the world and offers a unique combination of lectures, dissection, ultrasound, radiography, and clinical demonstrations. During the module, SMDC’s ISELP Certified veterinarians provide instruction in both the presentations and the wetlabs. The module is organized by Ir. Bo Staal and serves as an essential part of postgraduate education for both young and experienced equine sports medicine veterinarians.
Through ISELP, SMDC actively contributes to the ongoing professionalization of equine veterinary medicine worldwide.
