SMDC offers a small-scale externship program for veterinarians working within the Altano Group and for residents of recognized colleges such as ECVSMR, ECVDI, and ECVS. Our goal is to introduce motivated colleagues to our multidisciplinary approach to equine sports medicine, advanced imaging, orthopedics, rehabilitation, internal medicine, and dentistry.
Externship program
During the externship, the visiting colleague takes part in the daily clinical work, observes specialized diagnostics and treatments, and has the opportunity to discuss cases with our team members.
Externs are invited to give a one-hour presentation on a topic of their choice. This may be a clinical case, a subject within equine veterinary medicine, or a theme that encourages discussion. A brief introduction of the extern and their work environment is also part of the presentation.
To ensure the externship runs smoothly, a few house rules apply:
- Proactive attitude: be motivated and engaged. Always introduce yourself to clients when you are present during an examination.
- Confidentiality: signing a nondisclosure agreement is mandatory.
- Professional behavior: show respect toward colleagues, clients, and horses.
- Phone use: no phone use in the presence of clients.
- Respect workflow: discuss cases at an appropriate time, never in the presence of clients.
- Clothing: wear neat and functional clinical attire.
- Schedule: on your first day we expect you at 7:00 a.m. You will receive the daily schedule upon arrival.
- Submission of information in advance: please provide your contact details, an emergency number, and a recent photo before arrival.
