The Sporthorse Medical Diagnostic Centre (SMDC) is a recognized training location for a residency in diagnostic imaging (ECVDI – European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging), in collaboration with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Utrecht University.
Board certification Diagnostic Imaging
The ECVDI is the European specialist college for veterinary diagnostic imaging. Veterinarians who complete an ECVDI residency are trained as specialists in radiology, ultrasonography, CT, MRI, and nuclear medicine in animals. The three- to four-year program combines intensive clinical training, academic education, scientific research, and active participation in international conferences.
The ECVDI residency at SMDC is unique because of:
- Multidisciplinary environment: The resident collaborates with specialists in orthopedics, internal medicine, sports medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, and hoof health.
- State-of-the-art imaging: SMDC has advanced equipment such as a standing MRI, dual-energy CT, gamma camera for scintigraphy, high-resolution ultrasound, and digital radiography, allowing nearly the entire horse to be examined in detail.
- Academic collaboration: The resident takes part in both the clinic in Heesch and the faculty in Utrecht, ensuring an optimal combination of clinical expertise and academic development.
- Supervision by board certified specialists: At both SMDC and the university, ECVDI diplomates guide the resident in image interpretation, case discussions, research, and publications.
The resident is trained to independently perform, evaluate, and interpret complex imaging studies. This intensive and comprehensive program provides a strong foundation for obtaining the ECVDI diploma and pursuing a career as a specialist in veterinary diagnostic imaging.
