History of SMDC

SMDC was founded with a bold vision: to create an advanced diagnostic and treatment center for sport horses, where modern imaging, multidisciplinary expertise, and scientific precision would set the standard in equine medicine. Another key goal was to provide an inspiring work environment and foster knowledge sharing.

Our core values: Excellence – Teamwork – Inspiring Working Environment

The start

The foundation was laid when Dr. Erik Bergman and Dr. Frans van Toor introduced Vet-CT in 2006, the first CT scanner for horses in the Benelux. This technological breakthrough added a new dimension to orthopedic diagnostics and complemented the scintigraphy introduced by Dr. Bergman in the Netherlands in 2003. This collaboration ultimately led to the establishment of the Sporthorse Medical Diagnostic Centre (SMDC) in 2015.

At home in Heesch

Finding the right location was a challenge, but SMDC ultimately established its home in Heesch, on the former site of veterinarian Ruud van der Linden. This offered growth opportunities, and it quickly became clear that the demand for expertise was high. From the outset, there was close collaboration with physiotherapists (Dewi Bergman and Denise de Wilde) and a regular farrier (Kees Alblas). The team expanded to include Dr. Elisabeth van Veggel, who later became a European Specialist in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging, and Dr. Brenda Hoogelander, an ISELP-certified orthopedic specialist.

From Orthopedic Clinic to Multidisciplinary Center

As SMDC grew, its expertise expanded as well. What began as a clinic for orthopedic diagnostics evolved into a multidisciplinary center, integrating sports medicine and rehabilitation with internal medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, and farriery. A strong scientific foundation in anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics became the basis of this multidisciplinary and multimodal approach, ensuring that diagnostics and treatment are not only precise but also evidence-based.

Technological advancements

Technological advancements have played a major role in SMDC’s development. With the introduction of the Hallmarq MRI, MIE scintigraphy, AI-assisted motion analysis (Sleip, Equinosis, Qualisys), and the Calibra CT Dual Energy, the diagnostic capabilities were further expanded.

SMDC became the first clinic in the region able to perform standing CT scans of the head, up to the middle of the neck, and of the limbs up to and including the carpus and hock.

Key role in knowledge transfer and education

In addition to clinical excellence, knowledge transfer and education have always played a key role at SMDC. The dedication to advancing veterinary medicine led to the establishment of the Altano Academy , a leading educational platform for equine veterinarians.

In addition, SMDC organizes the annual ISELP module , where veterinarians from around the world come together to further specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of the musculoskeletal system.

Today, all orthopedic specialists at SMDC are ISELP-certified (or well advanced in their training toward certification), highlighting their expertise in musculoskeletal disorders.

Impact and innovation

SMDC’s impact extends beyond the clinic itself. Through research, collaboration, and international knowledge sharing, the clinic has established itself as a leading global center of expertise in equine medicine.

With the addition of specialists in pain management, rehabilitation, and advanced dentistry, SMDC continues to lead in innovation.

Part of the Altano Group

As part of the Altano Group (since 2019), SMDC is recognized as a flagship equine clinic, serving as a benchmark for quality and expertise at an international level.

With a dedicated team, advanced technology, and a continuous drive for progress, the clinic continues to evolve to provide every horse with the best possible care, from diagnosis to recovery.

In this way, we contribute to optimal performance and well-being.
