Collaborations
The Sporthorse Medical Diagnostic Centre (SMDC) works daily to provide the highest quality care for sport horses. We achieve this ambition not alone, but through close collaboration with strong national and international partners.
Overview of our collaborations:
DD-Physio
DD-Physio is a team of equine physiotherapists with whom SMDC collaborates on a regular basis. Together, we support sport horses in prevention, rehabilitation, and performance optimization. The physiotherapists at DD-Physio are broadly trained and offer services including:
- Physiotherapy & exercise therapy
- Manual therapy & orthomanual techniques
- Chiropractic care (FES-certified)
- Fascia release & dry needling
- Medical taping, laser- and electrotherapy
- Powerplate Pulse
- Rider guidance and management advice
These treatments are used for rehabilitation after injuries, as well as for vague complaints, movement problems, or as part of a preventive health plan. Collaboration with DD-Physio is an integral part of our multidisciplinary approach.
DEPC
Through the Dutch Equine Podiatry Centre (DEPC), we offer high-level expertise in orthopedic shoeing. DEPC is closely linked to SMDC and plays a crucial role in optimizing hoof balance and supporting orthopedic treatment plans. This includes:
- Corrective shoeing for limb conformation issues
- Orthopedic shoeing for tendon or joint injuries
- Preventive support for sport horses
Our collaboration with DEPC allows us to integrate hoof care into the broader orthopedic and rehabilitation program.
Altano Group
SMDC is part of the Altano Group, an international network of over 100 leading equine clinics and practices. This collaboration gives us access to a vast network of veterinarians and specialists, allowing us to share knowledge and leverage expertise worldwide.
Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht
In collaboration with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Utrecht, SMDC runs an ECVDI residency program(diagnostic imaging). This program allows young veterinarians to develop into European specialists under the guidance of our experienced team of ECVDI Diplomates and Associate Members, alongside ECVSMR Diplomates and specialists from the Faculty.
ISELP
The International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP) provides us not only with a wealth of information on equine locomotor disorders but also with a worldwide network of orthopedic veterinarians. This enables us to frequently perform pre-purchase examinations on behalf of international clients who contact us through an ISELP colleague.
Conversely, we can assist our clients by connecting them with a trusted colleague abroad, for example, to provide on-site support leading up to or during a competition, or for a pre-purchase examination of a horse located overseas.
FES
Focus on the Equine Spine is an organization that provides training programs for veterinarians and physiotherapists to become certified chiropractors. The program emphasizes a multidisciplinary and holistic approach to the horse. It offers in-depth education on anatomy, neurophysiology, biomechanics, pathology, treatment, and rehabilitation of horses. Graduates form an international network of broadly trained veterinarians and physiotherapists, with whom we collaborate to guide horses toward peak performance while prioritizing welfare.
ESMP
Equine Sports Medicine Practice is based in Belgium, but their board-certified internal medicine and orthopedic specialists work worldwide. In specific cases, we collaborate with them to provide our clients with the best service in equine internal medicine. One of the services they offer is TVEC (Transvenous Electrical Conversion) for horses with cardiac arrhythmias.
