Cardiac Examination
The heart plays a crucial role in oxygen supply and the overall performance of the horse. Cardiac abnormalities often go unnoticed at first but may eventually lead to reduced endurance, loss of performance, or even life-threatening conditions. At the Sporthorse Medical Diagnostic Centre (SMDC), we offer advanced cardiological examinations performed by a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ECVSMR).
Indications for a cardiac examination
- Heart murmur detected during clinical examination
- Reduced stamina
- Unexplained loss of performance
- Irregular heartbeat or arrhythmia
- Syncope (fainting) or sudden collapse
- Screening during pre-purchase or breeding examinations
Contents of the examination
The clinical examination is the first step in the cardiological evaluation of the horse. This includes assessing pulse, respiration, mucous membrane color, and capillary refill time, along with careful cardiac auscultation to detect murmurs or arrhythmias. These findings determine whether further diagnostic tests are needed. The examination is performed by a European specialist (Diplomate ECVSMR) and may include several components.
ECG (Electrocardiogram) at rest and during exercise
An ECG (or electrocardiogram) is a non-invasive test used to detect cardiac rhythm abnormalities at rest and during exercise. Electrodes are placed on the horse’s skin to record the electrical activity of the heart. In specific cases, a 24-hour recording may be required to determine how frequently abnormalities occur within a day — this is known as a Holter analysis.
Echocardiography
Echocardiography (or “heart scan”) is one of the most important techniques for visualizing the horse’s heart. This specialized form of ultrasound allows for a precise evaluation of the heart’s size, shape, and function, as well as its valves. Using our state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment, we can accurately assess the following aspects:
- Cardiac structures (such as ventricles, atria, and heart valves)
- Contractile strength and pumping function
- Valve insufficiencies and leakages
- Abnormalities in blood flow (using Doppler technology)
- Thickening or enlargement of the heart muscles
- Pericardial effusion or other structural abnormalities
Exercise testing
If needed, an exercise test can be performed to evaluate the functional impact of the findings. During this test, various parameters are recorded before, during, and after exercise to monitor the horse’s endurance. In some cases, training at home may also be guided through heart rate monitoring.
Same-day results available
Our specialists combine the results of the cardiac examination with a thorough clinical assessment, training history, information about the horse’s goals, and any additional diagnostic findings. This approach provides a complete picture of the horse’s cardiac health.
The findings are documented in a written report and discussed with the owner and, when applicable, the referring veterinarian. Through specialist expertise, advanced equipment, and multidisciplinary collaboration, we provide a reliable assessment and effective treatment recommendations for all types of cardiac conditions.
