Radiography

Radiographic examination is an essential technique for detailed visualization of bones and joints. At the Sporthorse Medical Diagnostic Centre (SMDC), we use state-of-the-art digital radiography systems with multiple generators specifically designed to meet the demands of sport horses.

When Is radiography used?

Diagnosis of Severe Injury
For example, in cases where a fracture is suspected.

Additional Examination for Lameness
Detection of arthritis, fissures (small bone cracks), bone inflammation, or tendon and ligament attachment issues.

Pre-purchase Examinations
Assessment of bone health as part of a comprehensive clinical evaluation.

Why choose radiographic imaging at SMDC?

State-of-the-art equipment

Our radiography suite is equipped with three high-performance X-ray units:

  • A fixed generator for imaging the limbs and head
  • A fixed generator and bucky for imaging the spine
  • A mobile X-ray unit for use with sensitive or nervous horses

Specialist Evaluation

At SMDC, experienced veterinarians and a European Specialist in Diagnostic Imaging work together to interpret radiographic images directly and relate them to the clinical findings. This ensures a reliable and accurate diagnosis.

Fast and Efficient

The images are immediately available in digital form, evaluated by experienced veterinarians, and discussed with the owner. Because they are stored on a central server, the images can easily be shared online, both now and in the future.

Safety for horse and human

Although X-ray radiation is essential in veterinary diagnostics, we take maximum safety measures to keep exposure to an absolute minimum. Our team operates according to the highest standards, including:

  • Lead aprons and lead gloves
  • Radiation badges to monitor exposure
  • Strict protocols for distance and protective measures
  • A certified radiation safety officer who ensures compliance with all government regulations

Please note: Pregnant women and individuals under 18 years of age are not allowed in the radiography room.

Top-quality imaging, specialist evaluation, and a multidisciplinary approach to achieve a fast and effective diagnosis.
