Respiratory examination at SMDC – Breathing is performance
A healthy respiratory system is essential for sport horses. Even mild respiratory problems can limit performance and affect your horse’s well-being. At SMDC, we have the expertise and equipment to quickly and accurately detect both upper and lower airway problems.
We combine endoscopy (visual inspection of the nose, throat, and windpipe) with additional tests such as a tracheal wash or BAL (bronchoalveolar lavage), which allow us to identify inflammatory cells or infections in the lower airways. If necessary, we perform exercise tests to diagnose exercise-related issues, such as laryngeal hemiplegia (roaring) or EIPH (exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage).
Our ECVSMR specialist links the findings to a targeted treatment plan, with attention to medication, training, environment, and management.
