Advanced training in veterinary dentistry

Each year, the Sporthorse Medical Diagnostic Centre (SMDC) in Heesch organizes a specialized Equine Dentistry Day, aimed at veterinarians and equine dental practitioners who want to deepen their knowledge and skills in equine veterinary dentistry. This day focuses on the latest insights, practical techniques, and multidisciplinary collaboration in dental care.

The program

The program consists of a combination of theoretical lectures and hands-on workshops, led by nationally and internationally recognized specialists. Topics vary each year but include, among others:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of diastemata, fractures, infundibular caries, and EOTRH
  • Restorative dentistry (such as fillings of incisors and molars)
  • Extraction techniques for incisors and molars (including minimally invasive buccotomy and segmentation)
  • Use of dental endoscopy, X-ray, and CT for dental diagnostics
  • Dentistry in relation to orthopedic issues and poor performance

Equine Occlusal Equilibration & Diagnostics Module

An important part of the annual training program is the Equine Occlusal Equilibration & Diagnostics Module, organized in collaboration with Dr. Nick Moore and Dr. Marco van Schie. This multi-day, intensive module is designed for veterinarians who want to deepen their knowledge in:

  • Hypsodonte anatomy and pathology
  • Occlusal balancing and the biomechanics of the equine dentition
  • Diagnosis of malocclusions
  • Imaging and radiology in dentistry
  • Geriatric and juvenile dental care
In this module, alongside theory, extensive attention is given to practical training with direct supervision from the instructors. Thanks to the small group size, there is plenty of room for individual feedback and discussion of your own cases. The Dentistry Day and the Equine Occlusal Equilibration & Diagnostics Module contribute to the further professionalization of equine dental care, both nationally and internationally.
