Treatment of respiratory disorders

A healthy respiratory system is crucial for a horse’s performance and well-being. However, respiratory disorders are common, ranging from mild allergic reactions to severe infections or chronic lung conditions. At SMDC, treatment focuses on identifying the cause, addressing the symptoms in a targeted way, and optimizing management.

Accurate diagnosis is essential

For effective treatment of the respiratory system, an accurate diagnosis is essential. At SMDC, the respiratory system is examined by an ECVSMR specialist. Depending on the symptoms, various examinations may be performed, such as:

  • Endoscopy of the nasal passages, throat, trachea, and bronchi
  • Tracheal wash and/or bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) for cytological examination
  • Ultrasonography of the lungs
  • Blood tests
  • Lung function testing or radiographic imaging in cases of suspected conditions of the deeper airways

Treatment options

Treatment is tailored to the cause and severity of the condition and may include:

  • Anti-inflammatory medication (for example, corticosteroids)
  • Bronchodilators (airway dilators)
  • Antibiotics for bacterial infections
  • Mucolytics to clear mucus

In addition, environmental management is addressed, aiming for dust reduction (soaking hay, low-dust bedding), optimal ventilation, and avoidance of ammonia and mold in the stable.

Medication and follow-up

Medication can be administered very effectively directly into the airways using a nebulizer system. This delivers active substances straight into the lower airways, ensuring rapid effect with minimal side effects elsewhere in the body. This approach is especially valuable for horses with chronic respiratory disorders or airway allergies.

Chronic respiratory problems require structured follow-up. Treatment response is evaluated through repeated examinations or clinical observation. In collaboration with the rider, trainer, and stable manager, we work toward sustainable recovery and preservation of athletic capacity.
