Autologous substances
Orthobiologics are substances that occur naturally in the body or are derived from it and play a role in the healing of tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints. They are often obtained from the horse’s own blood but can also come from carefully selected donors. These products are administered locally to deliver their regenerative effect precisely where it is needed in the body.
Bij SMDC maken we gebruik van diverse orthobiologische producten, afgestemd op de aard van de blessure:
- PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)
A high concentration of platelets. These platelets contain growth factors that stimulate cell growth, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. PRP is commonly used for tendon injuries. - IRAP (Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein)
Used in the treatment of joint inflammations and osteoarthritis. IRAP blocks the action of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1. - Allogeneic stem cells
These stem cells are derived from healthy donor horses and are used for complex or poorly healing tendon or ligament injuries. They stimulate cell renewal and tissue repair and can be applied ready-to-use, without processing time. - Alpha-2 macroglobulin (A2M)
A naturally occurring protein with anti-inflammatory properties that acts as a natural inhibitor of cartilage breakdown. A2M blocks enzymes involved in the degradation of joint cartilage and is therefore used, for example, in early osteoarthritis.
After establishing an accurate diagnosis, the most suitable product is selected. The injection is usually performed under ultrasound guidance, ensuring the preparation is delivered precisely at the correct location for maximum effectiveness.
Orthobiologics are an essential part of the multimodal and multidisciplinary approach at SMDC. Combined with recovery training, physiotherapy, optimized shoeing, and nutrition, they contribute to sustainable recovery and a successful return to sport.
