Hoof health is a crucial part of a horse’s well-being and performance. Improper trimming or shoeing can lead to lameness, abnormal gait patterns, and orthopedic problems. At SMDC, we work closely (with daily presence) with the certified farriers of DEPC to optimize hoof balance. In addition, they have extensive experience in applying orthopedic shoeing.
De juiste basis voor optimaal bewegen
Why orthopedic shoeing?
In orthopedic shoeing, the farrier, in consultation with the veterinarian, makes adjustments to the shoeing in order to:
- To optimize the load on structures in the limb or body;
- To support the rehabilitation of orthopedic problems;
- To improve the horse’s movement, balance, and comfort.
This may include the use of special shoes (for example, full-roller shoes, open-toe shoes, or shoes with a wide toe and narrow branches), sole support, and shock-absorbing materials. In addition, the farrier can treat conditions such as hoof wall cracks.
Collaboration with Kees Alblas
At the Sporthorse Medical Diagnostic Centre (SMDC), we work closely with farrier Kees Alblas of the Dutch Equine Podiatry Centre (DEPC). As farrier for TeamNL and several major sport stables, Kees has many years of experience with top-level sport horses. He is involved in both orthopedic diagnostics and the development of an individually tailored shoeing plan.
During the clinical examination of the horse, the veterinarian and farrier jointly analyze hoof balance, movement, load, and any abnormalities. Based on this information and imaging (radiography, ultrasonography, and, if needed, CT or MRI), a treatment strategy is developed in which shoeing may play a central role.
Combining veterinary expertise (ISELP/ECVSMR) with the practical knowledge of certified and specialized farrier Kees Alblas and his colleagues provides a unique added value within SMDC. Together, we strive for functional recovery, injury prevention, and peak performance for every horse—regardless of discipline or level.
What does the farrier’s examination involve?
Inspection of hoof shape and structure
We assess the balance, conformation, and quality of the hooves.
2. Motion analysis
Together with our orthopedic specialists, we evaluate the influence of hoof shape and current shoeing on the gait pattern.
3. Diagnostic Imaging
Radiographs help assess internal structures such as hoof bone position, sole thickness, and underlying pathology.
The collaboration between veterinarians and farriers at SMDC ensures that hoof-related problems are optimally addressed and fully integrated into the horse’s treatment plan. In addition, orthopedic shoeing is often essential in the rehabilitation of tendon injuries or other conditions.

Together with the best specialists in their fields, we provide the most optimal support for your horse.
