For optimal pain relief, a combination of local infiltration anesthesia and\/or nerve block anesthesia (numbing the nerves that supply the tooth and jaw) is used. This ensures the horse remains comfortable and cooperative throughout the treatment.  <\/p><p>Depending on the situation, additional imaging (such as radiographs or CT scans) is performed beforehand to clearly assess the tooth root structure and any pathology. This allows us to plan the extraction carefully and prevent complications. <\/p><h2>Aftercare<\/h2><p>After extraction, the wound area is cleaned and, if necessary, sutured. Most horses recover quickly and without complications. This eventually leads to painful, loose, inflamed, or even fractured teeth. <\/p><p>The symptoms may be subtle in the early stages. Many horses mask pain, making early recognition important. Watch for the following signs:  <\/p><ul><li>Behavioral changes or loss of performance<\/li><li>Reduced appetite or slow eating<\/li><li>Difficulty biting off carrots or hay<\/li><li>Dropping or balling up feed<\/li><li>Weight loss<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cd69eb4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cd69eb4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Signs during training:<\/p><ul><li>Resistance when taking the bit<\/li><li>Unsteady contact to the bit<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bbea79b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bbea79b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Visible signs include:<\/p><ul><li>Inflammation or swelling of the gums around the incisors<\/li><li>Redness, blood, or pus around the incisors<\/li><li>Receding gums or exposed tooth roots<\/li><li>Discoloration or fractured incisors<\/li><li>Bad breath<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e5a0e95 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e5a0e95\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Diagnosis<\/p><p>Radiographic examination is essential to determine the severity and extent of the disease. The images are used to assess tooth resorption, excessive cement formation, and bone changes. <\/p><p>EOTRH is progressive and cannot be cured, but it can be managed. Treatment depends on the stage: <\/p><ul><li><strong>Mild cases: <\/strong>regular monitoring with clinical and radiographic examinations, combined with targeted pain management.<\/li><li><strong>Severe cases:<\/strong> extraction of the affected incisors is often the best solution. Although this may sound drastic, horses experience visible pain relief and function very well without incisors. <\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-52dc7b2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"52dc7b2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>At SMDC, incisor extractions are performed with the horse standing under sedation and local anesthesia.
